Southwold's Red Cross Ambulance had been turned over in Ferry Road by the weight of the shingle swept against it. The driver, Frank Hurr, clambered out only to be swept off between the houses, clinging to a timber door. He was washed right across the marshes, ending up on Whin Hill on Southwold Common. Billy Eastaugh, who had been in the passenger seat, was more fortunate, managing to reach the beach safely. Hear John Winter recount this story by clicking on the third audio extract. P1117 |
