Geophysical survey reveals traces of late medieval Southwold
SMHS President, Simon Loftus, writes:
The latest phase of our geophysical survey of Gun Hill and South Green confirms what oral tradition has long claimed - that the pre-fire town of Southwold extended to areas that are now open greens. Some of the evidence is hard to interpret, particularly because the traces of World War 2 defences have erased earlier foundations, but the overall conclusion is unambiguous - and it is wonderful to recognise the ghostly outlines of the late medieval town on South Green. Once again we are indebted to the generosity of an American donor - Geoffrey Fleming - and to the expertise of Dave Bescoby for making this survey possible, and to a team of our own volunteers led by Chis Cardwell.
